Auburn's Movie Night Returns for 5th Season

One of Auburn's signature summer events, "Movies Under the Moonlight," returns tonight with a showing of "Boss Baby" starring Alec Baldwin.

The brainchild of Tri-City Furniture owners Lee and Kathy Kilbourn, the 5th annual lawn chair film series features family-oriented fun for people of all ages.

"It's a gathering place for the entire community," Lee Kilbourn said. "I like to do these movies because they're very family-oriented. People need to do things with their kids. This is a wholesome event that parents need not fear bringing their kids to."

The movie, projected on the side of the TriCity Furniture building, begins at dusk, but people typically gather around 8 p.m. to listen to local musical entertainment, do some light reading and socialize with their fellow community members. Free popcorn is available and an Auburn-based Boy Scout troop raises money by selling hot dogs and pop.

Kilbourn said the support of sponsoring Auburn businesses has been tremendous.

"All of our costs for the movies are paid for by sponsors that care about the community and want people to have a great time on a summer's night," he said. "Thanks to local businesses, there is no charge for residents to see the movies."

Auburn was ahead of the curve in offering this type of event, Kilbourn said.

"Other communities have started doing this after us," he said. "Midland and Bay City both began movie nights after us. The movies are mixed. Some are geared toward kids, some are more adult-oriented. It all depends on the audience you think will come out. We wanted to keep our event family-friendly."

"Movies Under the Moonlight" includes three other films this summer:

"Finding Dory" on July 25,

"Lego Batman" on August 8 and the series finale,

"Moana" on August 22.

Moviegoers are asked to bring their own lawn chair or blanket.
