Movie Nights in Auburn Return

Lee Kilbourn, owner of TriCity Furniture in Auburn, has announced that he and his wife Kathy’s lawn chair film festival is returning for a second season with a new name and a great lineup of family-friendly movies.

Movies Under the Moonlight” debuts on July 23 with a showing of UP, a comedy-adventure film that in 2009 became the first animated and 3D film to open the Cannes Film Festival. The film, starring Edward Asner and Christopher Plummer, centers around a 78-year-old widower named Carl Fredrickson (voiced by Asner) who sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream of traveling to the wilds of South America by tying thousands of balloons to his home. Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years Frederick’s junior, unwittingly becomes a part of the adventure. The film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and Kilbourn is excited that it’s kicking off this summer’s season.

“I’ve had good input from a number of Auburn residents to help pick out the movies,” he said. “I’ve had people stop me in town to ask me what will be showing and when, so we are looking forward to a great lineup. We’re just hoping everyone has a great time and the rain stays away.”

In the event of rain, Grace Lutheran Church has agreed to host movie night in its gymnasium, Kilbourn said. The movies start at dusk and people are asked to bring lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and their own beverages to the feature film showings. No alcohol or pets are allowed.

Kilbourn got the idea from attending lawn chair film festivals in neighboring communities that drew lots of people.

It seemed like a great way to bring more people into downtown Auburn and thank his company’s loyal customers.

“Kathy (Lee’s wife) and I do this to give back to the people of Auburn for their support of TriCity Furniture,” Kilbourn said. “We have a great town with many great people. I feel good about this summer season.”

On July 30, at approximately 9:10 p.m., Kilbourn and company will show The Avengers, a 143-minute film about a group of superhumans who join forces to help save the Earth from Loki and his army.

Movies Under the Moonlight continues on Aug. 13 with the Princess Bride and concludes on Aug. 20 with the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, slated to begin at about 8:30 p.m.

The movies are projected on the side of Kilbourn’s building, located at 135 W. Midland Road, in Auburn. There is no charge to attend
